Is the ice safe?
All frozen bodies of water are to be considered potentially dangerous. Ice does not form uniformly over the entire surface of a water body. Ice thickness at one location should not be considered to be indicative of ice thickness over a whole water body or geographic region. Persons who are not personally familiar with the ice conditions should systematically and safely check the ice thickness before undertaking an activity on the ice.
Twelve Quick Tips
1. Test the ice
2. Beware! Wind and current break the ice
3. Dress in layers
4. Bring food and hot drinks
5. Fish with a partner
6. Don't gather in large groups
7. No fires on the ice
8. Bring blankets and a first aid kit
9. If you fall in, reach for solid ice, kick and roll to safety
10. Follow all fishing regulations
11. Don't drive cars onto the ice
12. Clean up!
